Zero waste for Bujumbura
BZWTP, the Bujumbura Zero Waste Transition Programme, is a plan to collect, sort and recover the city's waste instead of burying it, starting at the Buterere landfill.
Proposed · seeking partners and fundingThe challenge
Most of Bujumbura's waste ends up at the Buterere and Mubone sites, used since 1983 and 2009. Much of it could have been a resource.
- ~730,000 tof waste already stored at the site over the years
- 35–40,000 treaching the site each year
- 56–72%of it organic, so it can become compost or energy
Estimates from PCS research for the programme. To be updated as studies are completed.
The proposed solution

A circular-economy programme, designed as a public-private partnership with the Government of Burundi, that grows in five phases.
- Collection & sortingSeparate organic, plastic, metal and other waste at the source and on site.
- Recycling & recoveryTurn sorted materials into compost and recycled products.
- Landfill rehabilitationMake the Buterere site safer and smaller over time.
- Awareness & educationHelp households, schools and markets reduce and sort waste.
- Local jobsCreate work in collection, sorting and recovery.
- Community partnersWork with neighbourhoods, institutions and existing waste workers.
Five phases, planned
Start small, prove it works, then scale. Capacity in tonnes of waste handled per day:
Intended impact
- Less waste buried, more recovered
- A cleaner, healthier city
- Jobs in a new local industry
- A model other cities in the region can follow
